About the Freeze

Update, April 2024: Our 2023-24 season has finished and we’re getting ready for our next season, which starts late September 2024. Send us a message here (or scroll to the bottom of the page) if you’re interested in being a part of the team.

The Philadelphia Freeze is a trans-inclusive, adult women’s ice hockey club, founded in 1974. Our club consists of four teams, each at a different skill level, ranging from beginner to former-college level. Our home ice is the University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 rink in University City.

The four Philadelphia Freeze teams play in the UWHL. The league has about 25 clubs, all within a two hour radius of Philadelphia.

With four teams, there is a skill level available for most players, whether you’re brand new to the sport or you’ve been playing forever. Age ranges on the teams are from 18 to 50+. The club is player-run and coaches are all volunteers.

The regular hockey season is from late September through March with approximately twenty regular practices/scrimmages at the Class of 1923 Rink in University City and games on most weekends. The dates are set in late-August for the full season. The first correspondences about the upcoming season are usually sent out to new players in September.

During the offseason players and sometimes entire teams go to tournaments and play in pick up games. Many players participate in a spring league run by IceWorks in Aston, PA (contact them for more information).
