About the Freeze

Update, June 2022: Our 2021-22 season has finished! We are enjoying the offseason and excited for our next season to start at the end of September. Send us a message here (or scroll to the bottom of the page) if you’re interested in being a part of the team.

The Philadelphia Freeze Women’s Ice Hockey club was founded in 1974. Currently there are three teams with our home ice at the University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 rink in University City, Philadelphia.

The three Philadelphia Freeze teams play in the United Women’s Hockey League. The league has about 25 women’s clubs, all within a two hour radius of Philadelphia.

With three teams, there is a skill level available for most players, from novice to experienced. Age ranges on the teams are from 18 to 50+. The club is player-run and coaches are all volunteers.

The regular hockey season is from October through March with approximately twenty regular practices/scrimmages at the Class of 1923 Rink in University City and games on most weekends. The dates are set in September for the full season.

We offer part-time and full-time player slots, as well as a practice/scrimmage-only package.

During the off-season players and sometimes entire teams go to tournaments and play in pick up games. Many participate in the women’s league run by IceWorks in Aston, PA (contact them for more information).
